2012 Vikings JV preview: The theme is to always improve

As the Valencia junior varsity football team goes into the 2012 season, there are two key factors that might determine how well the team performs.

Those factors are staying healthy and having enough team depth.

The Vikings hope to rebound off a disappointing 2011 season after finishing 5-5 mainly due to
injuries and not having enough depth at times to compete at their highest level.

Already, the team is in better shape as the program has had a bigger turnout of players this summer than ever before.

Balance is a key strength for Valencia this season as many players are returning after playing as freshmen and the team has the luxury of multiple players that can impact the game on both sides of the ball.

One new face to the roster is transfer quarterback Jake Silva, who played last season at Quartz Hill and will take the reins as starting quarterback for his new team.

“He is a very smart player with a good arm,” said head coach Curt White, “He is adjusting and learning our offense quickly and efficiently.”

The big men up front on the lines are keys to

Valencia’s pursuit of a Foothill League title.

“If we can be better and stronger up front this season both defensively and offensively, then we should be more competitive and win more,” White said, “Only time will tell.”

The Vikings also have a group of athletic receivers that can be solid contributors on the defensive side as well.

For example, Viking receivers Joe Ordaz and Brad Prizer, who also play as cornerbacks, will play important roles in moving the chains and shutting down opposing receivers.

Other players, like linebackers Josh Semko and Ryan Ferrone, will also get their opportunity playing on both sides of the ball.

There is a universal theme that Valencia will play by in the 2012 season to improve as a team.
