2012 Vikings frosh preview: Speed makes up for size

The Valencia freshman football team has high hopes going into the 2012 season and plans to take advantage of its strengths.

Those key strengths are team depth and speed.

The team’s depth is due to a major increase in players coming out to play this season as the roster consisted of almost 80 players in the summer.

This depth is drastically different from years past as the Vikings had to work with a smaller crop of players before.

Another ingredient that the Viking freshman squad has not been used to in recent years is the amount of skill players and playmakers on the field.

The Vikings, who finished 6-4 last season, have a smaller and quicker team than ever before and will look to use that to their advantage, said head coach Kevin Kornegay.

“I’d take speed over size any day,” Kornegay said. ”We want to spread defenses out and let our playmakers break loose.”

At the same time, as they are strong in one department, they lack in another.

Size could play a vital role, as the team lacks interior size and big bodies on the line, but hopes to counter that weakness with its athleticism.

Leading the pack of Viking skill players will be quarterback Cole Parkinson.

“Cole is arguably the best player on the team, has leadership, a strong arm and all the intangibles to be great this year and in years to come,” Kornegay said.

Other notable players who could have a tremendous impact are safety/running back Michael Pittman and running back/defensive back Gavin Butler.

Every day at the end of practice, Kornegay makes the team run a Foothill League sprint in order to help build conditioning and accomplish the team’s ultimate goal.

The sprint is 100 yards across the field to mark the end of practice.

“Our one and only goal is to win the Foothill League and be crowned champs,” Kornegay said.
