The Santa Clarita City Council unanimously agreed Tuesday night to provide the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center and the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley a one-time $100,000 donation each to help them stave off the effects of a severe budget crises.

Councilman Bob Kellar called for the donations, noting the Boys & Girls Club raised less than half its usual revenue during the annual June auction, its main fundraising event. The Senior Center has turned seniors away who show up for free lunches and has a waiting list for home-delivered meals.

“I think we are at a critical position here for both the Senior Center and the Boys & Girls Club,” Kellar said, calling for the donation to come from the city’s contingency fund.

Several members of the audience spoke in favor of the plan, one saying the city should double the amount given to the two longtime Santa Clarita Valley institutions.

The money would be set aside for specific purposes in each case, council members agreed during discussion. Funds for the Senior Center would go toward the home-delivered meals program, and those for the Boys & Girls Club would be set aside to guarantee the club didn’t have to suspend late after-school day care or shut down its facilities on Fridays, as was being considered, a board member said.

Before the vote passed unanimously to audience applause, Mayor Frank Ferry expressed concern that other nonprofits would feel slighted by the city’s donations.

“You have home-bound seniors who have to be fed,” he said, calling the funds a response to “specific, dire need that we’ve identified at this time.”

In introducing his motion, Kellar called both institutions an “extension of public services to the community.”
