Despite a potent defensive effort, the Valencia girls soccer team could not overcome the Eagles of Chaminade in the championship game of the Hart Showcase Tournament.

Chaminade (15-0) defeated Valencia (8-5-1) 1-0 on Monday.

A 25-yard free kick from the Eagles' Ryann Appell in the first half was all it took for Chaminade to secure a win.

"It was a great game, very physical and fast," said Valencia head coach Sean O'Connell. "(Chaminade) is probably the best team we have played yet as far as matching us speed-wise."

Prior to facing the undefeated Eagles in the finals, Valencia beat Crescenta Valley 3-1 in the semifinal round, while Chaminade defeated Mission League-mate Louisville High of Woodland Hills 3-0.

After a slow first half in Monday's matchup, O'Connell said his team took it up a notch in the second half.
Chaminade could not score in transition because of the Vikings suffocating defense led by Kylie Trammell, Tiffany Geer and Madison White.

"Although we played extremely well in the first half we kicked into gear in the second half," O'Connell said.
"We outplayed them but we just couldn't find the net."

O'Connell said the contest was a significant test for the competition the team will face in the Foothill League.

The Vikings open Foothill action against Saugus on Jan. 13.

"This is the type of game we need to withstand to compete in the Foothill League," O'Connell said.

O'Connell added that the Centurions will likely pose the Vikings' biggest threat in league competition.

"(Chaminade) is as good or better than anyone in Foothill League," the coach added.

He said the fast paced, back and forth contest against the Eagles put on display a lot of things the team still has to work on.

"To lose to this team, there definitely is no shame," O'Connell said.
