Survey says reception a key issue

Reliable cellphone coverage is a factor in attracting and retaining customers a recent survey found.

In a national study conducted among 847 adults, 63 percent of the respondents said they would never return to a hotel for business or leisure reasons that had poor cell phone reception. The number of people who felt this way increased 9 percent in just three years in a related survey of hotel visitors when asked about their rebooking habits.

Likewise, 58 percent of all survey respondents said they would never select, or return to, office space for their own business or an apartment building with poor cellphone reception.

The study was reportedly conducted by an independent research firm on behalf of Santa Barbara-based Repeated Signal Solutions, a company that provides in-building cell and wireless antenna systems.

“Today’s consumer has a very low threshold for poor cell coverage and dropped calls, and it has a significant impact on where they choose to live, work and spend leisure time,” said Scott Groff, CEO of Repeated Signal Solutions.

The landscape is more competitive than it was three years ago, Groff said. Strong cell coverage is clearly an expectation and poor coverage can be a deal breaker in attracting a customer base.

“Large companies are now asking cellular telephone carriers to subsidize the installation of local or distributed antenna networks,” he said, “because their employees are under contract to pay for hundreds of employee cell phones monthly.”
