Letter: A more sensible location for the Civic Center

Regarding the new courthouse and Sheriff’s Station: I am very glad to see the move of these two facilities put on hold (Signal, Sept. 11).

They do not need to be moved. The present library can now be closed and combined with the new mega library in Newhall. That would make all of the current Civic Center site available for either complete remodeling and expansion of both the court and Sheriff’s Station, or demolition and building a new state-of-the-art facility for both — on property already owned and centrally located where it should be ... not out in a cow pasture near Castaic.

Is Capt. Becker, our police chief, the only one who is not in favor of the move? Obviously Supervisor Antonovich is pushing it, but where is the City Council on this issue?

Only Gail Ortiz voiced an opinion in The Signal. She said that the city was going to take a “watch and wait position to see what happens.”

Now is the time for the City Council to go on record either to keep the Civic Center where it is in a more centralized location for the city or let it go — and then what will take its place in the present location?

Or maybe there is an ace in this deck someplace, and the city is still hoping one day to build the new mega City Hall somewhere in a new civic center site that they have been eyeing ... like the Bermite property?

OK, Signal, that’s a great story for you to explore because this decision will affect the entire valley, not just the city, for many years to come.

Please investigate all options that are available and get some input from the community now, before this goes any further and while we have the time. Thank you.
