LOS ANGELES (AP) — Coptic Christian and Muslim leaders are condemning the violence in the Middle East that was sparked by an anti-Islamic movie that has ties to a Southern California filmmaker who has since gone into hiding.

The leaders joined together in downtown Los Angeles on Monday to collectively denounce the movie "Innocence of Muslims" that denigrates Islam. They also condemned the violence that has resulted from the film being made.

Federal authorities have identified the filmmaker as Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, a Southern California man and a self-described Coptic Christian.

Nakoula went into hiding after he was interviewed by federal probation officers over the weekend.

Authorities were investigating whether the filmmaker, who has been convicted of a bank fraud charge, has violated the terms of his five-year probation.
