County residents to face tax bills

State officials have begun mailing out 19,016 fire-prevention bills to Los Angeles County property owners living in the State Responsibility Area, officials said this week.

The bill is $115 for Los Angeles County residents living in what are known as State Responsibility Areas in unincorporated parts of the county. These areas are land that is not covered by any local fire protection agency.

Most Santa Clarita Valley residents live within the Los Angeles County Fire Department fire protection agency and will not be required to pay the bill.

However, owners should make sure they are not being incorrectly billed, according to one state official.

“Property owners who receive bills should take a close look to make sure the bill they received is accurate,” said George Runner, state Board of Equalization member.

“If there’s a problem with your bill, the law only allows 30 days for you to file an appeal — and that’s 30 days from the date on the bill, not the date you receive it,” he said.
