Ex-Lynwood council members sentenced

LYNWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Two former Lynwood City Council members convicted of illegally boosting their salaries and racking up inappropriate bills on city credit cards have been sentenced to state prison.

The Los Angeles Times reports ( ) 80-year-old Louis Byrd was sentenced to five years and 47-year-old Fernando Pedroza got four years.

Byrd had faced a maximum sentence of six years, and Pedroza faced five. They were convicted in July of one count each of misappropriating public funds.

Prosecutors said the Los Angeles suburb's former officials broke the law by accepting stipends for sitting on city commissions that appeared to do little work.

Authorities said the two men also charged personal expenses on city credit cards.

Another former councilman, Arturo Reyes, pleaded guilty to grand theft and is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 12.
