A man and a woman are in custody today charged with the shotgun robbery of a Valencia home improvement store and the burglary of another hardware store, a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.

The couple was arrested during a traffic stop Sept. 12, one week after the armed holdup at the Home Depot on Newhall Ranch Road, said sheriff’s Deputy Joshua Dubin.

“Because we put out a crime broadcast, one of our deputies on patrol made a traffic stop based on that description,” Dubin told The Signal Wednesday. “And that’s how we got them.”

“It was good work on the part of that patrol deputy that led to the arrest,” Dubin said.

The couple is scheduled to appear in San Fernando Superior Court next week on charges stemming from the robbery and also a burglary that occurred at a local Lowe’s Home Improvement store, Dubin said.

On Sept. 5, a man and a woman said to be armed with a shotgun held up the Home Depot and made off with about $1,000 in stolen hardware, local sheriff’s officials said.

The couple entered the Home Depot about 5:15 p.m., revealed that they had a 12-gauge shotgun, stole some merchandise and fled, sheriff’s Lt. Tom Bryski said at the time.

The robbers reportedly escaped west on Newhall Ranch Road in what appeared to be an Impala with no licence plates.

According to deputies interviewed at the time of the robbery, the duo stole kits containing battery-powered tools. No shots were fired and no one was injured.

No weapon was recovered when deputies arrested a man and a woman Sept. 12, Dubin said.

Charged on suspicion of felony robbery and burglary are Nicholas Escarcega, 29, and Michelle Kruger, 27.
Escarcega was being held at Pitchess Dentention Center East Facility on $300,000 bail.

Krueger’s bail was set at $90,000. She was in custody at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood.
