PERRIS, Calif. (AP) — Forget horses, ostriches or dogs.

At Riverside County's Perris fair, the need for speed is part of the Diaper Derby. The first event was held Sunday and the second is scheduled Oct. 14.

The race is being revised after several years in mothballs.

Officials told the North County Times that crawling babies are the best contestants because if a child stands up, he or she is disqualified.

Parents or other relatives stand near the finish line of a 20-yard, knee-friendly rubber mat track. Waving toys and blankets and other enticements, parents and other relatives try to get their youngsters to head toward the finish line. The first across wins.

Another event making a comeback this year is the cow-chip-chucking contest.
