Squirrels vs. HOA

I was disappointed that The Signal didn't contact me before printing Cori Leffler's letter regarding the poisoning of the squirrels (Letters, Dec. 7).

Her letter omitted quite a bit of pertinent information that I would have been happy to furnish.

The ground squirrels have caused an estimated $8,000 to $10,000 in damage to a major common-area slope in American Beauty Classics HOA.

If allowed to continue, damage to this slope would soon threaten to collapse it when heavy rains come and water begins to shoot through the burrows left behind by these rodents.

If a slide occurs, it could take the homes at the top of the slope with it, endangering the lives of the residents who live there.

The association hired a pest control contractor to eliminate the squirrels after it was determined that there was no other feasible and cost-effective way to deal with the problem.

The contractor is licensed to use the chemicals described. If these chemicals were as horrible as Ms. Leffler and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) claim, do you really think it would be legal to use them?

As I explained to Ms. Leffler, since there is no insurance that covers earth movement, such a disaster could result in each homeowner in American Beauty being assessed several thousand dollars to pay for such a tragedy.

Unfortunately, if you don't tell some people exactly what they want to hear, and don't agree to immediately acquiesce to their demands, no matter how unreasonable, they think you are treating them rudely.

She is correct that we would not accept phone calls from PETA. This is an extremist group that actually stated that anyone who eats chicken is the equivalent of the perpetrators of The Holocaust. (Check out the term "Holocaust On Your Plate" on Google.)

I can see no reason to deal with people who cannot tell the difference between Colonel Sanders and Adolph Eichmann.
