Valencia bobcat, coyote sightings

Laura Tooma is afraid to let her three children play at their grandma’s house in Valencia. All they can think of, she says, is “My goodness, Grandma, what big coyotes and bobcats and wildlife you have.”

Tooma’s 70-pound husky, Izzy, is still recovering from bites and scratches on its snout and head from a fight with a coyote that hopped Tooma’s mother’s 6-foot backyard fence.

On Saturday, they were visited by a bobcat that had jumped onto the stone wall that runs between neighboring lots on Rexford Place, south of Hillsborough Parkway and Decoro Drive.

Tooma suspects the bobcat’s arrival might be because she no longer leaves her husky in her mother’s backyard.

“Now that there’s not a big dog in the yard, he’s coming around,” she said.

The bobcat is just the latest in a series of close encounters with Santa Clarita Valley’s wildlife.

“On four separate occasions the coyote has come into the yard,” Tooma said.

“I just don’t feel comfortable bringing my kids there and having them in the backyard,” she said.

Tooma’s children are aged 2, 4 and 6.

She said she’s not too familiar with bobcats. While the National Bobcat Rescue and Research Foundation says they are not a danger to humans, Tooma said she is still concerned.

“It just makes me worried,” she said. “They’re unpredictable.”
