A crowd of around 1,200 stepped out in Valencia on Saturday to try and bring a cure for diabetes closer to reality.

The American Diabetes Association holds Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes events around the country to raise money for diabetes research, as well as raise awareness about the disease. This year’s walk took place at the Mann Biomedical Park.

Event organizers said it will take about a week to know how much money the event raised, but it appears they are on track to meet their goal of $145,000, according to Lori Blumenthal, the manager of the event.

Blumenthal has organized the event every year since 2005, three years after her son Troy was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Her reason for volunteering her time is the same as her goal for her son, she said.

“We want a cure,” she said. “And I know I don’t want my son to live with diabetes the rest of his life.”

Other attendees shared Blumenthal’s story. Rhea Smith attended the event and organized an 11-member walk team for her son Bryce, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in September 2011. Like Blumenthal, Smith became an advocate for awareness the moment she learned of her son’s condition, she said.

“He’s my one and only,” Smith said. “I knew I wanted to jump in and do everything I could to learn more about this disease and help make lives better.”
