Letter: Bring out the positivity

Too much caffeine makes us jittery. Too much food makes us overweight. Too much negativity brings everyone down.

As David Hegg pointed out in Sunday’s paper, “The corrosive nature of negativity on us,” (Oct. 7, 2012) society is giving positive feedback to those who create stinging, negative “digs.”

In our daily lives, so many people want to be given two thumbs up for that smart zinger. This is not necessarily bad in small doses, but too much of anything is unhealthy.

Negativity is an unrecognized habit that is all too easy to fall into. A sarcastic, witty remark pointing out a fault, a mistake or even just a personal difference can be bruising if you don’t know what’s going on in that person’s life.

“I’m only kidding” can only go so far.

We all have our ups and downs. A simple smile can be a turning point in someone’s day. We don’t need to be “Stuart Smiley” of SNL, but so many people fail to edit themselves.

Is that one (or that fourth), cute comment going to produce a quick snicker among friends, or is it going to be one more comment that is piled upon too many remarks in a society where people are overstressed and depressed?

I challenge everyone to pay it forward and give at least one extra smile to someone each day and tell them one positive, honest compliment just to make their day.

You might find it’s your day that is brighter.
