Thursday’s the big shakeout — and Santa Clarita Valley students, teachers, city workers and the mayor are gearing up for it.

Every year since 2007, organizations across the state, including many in the Santa Clarita Valley, have been honing their emergency-preparedness skills by taking part in the Great California ShakeOut.

On Thursday at precisely 10:18 a.m., participants will practice what they should do in the event of an earthquake.

“Every year the (William S. Hart Union High) School District participates in the ShakeOut, including all of our school sites and district offices,” said district spokeswoman Gail Pinsker.

“We will be conducting the drill as advised by the city this year,” she said Monday. “We will also be testing our walkie talkie communications system between sites as a test to be prepared in case of a real emergency.

“Additionally, the district works with local agencies and media to conduct a large-scale evacuation drill that includes evacuating all premises — staff, students, teachers — checking our disaster trailer and making sure we have adequate supplies in case of an emergency.”

The district collects corporate, parental and personal donations each year to ensure each campus is stocked with emergency supplies, Pinsker said.

City Hall workers also prepare for the drill.

“The reason we do it is because we still have people who get scared who just want to run out of the building,” said Donna Nuzzi, emergency services supervisor for Santa Clarita.

Last year more than 12.5 million people were registered in ShakeOut drills worldwide.

Individuals, families and groups can also sign up to join ShakeOut exercises at
