On this date in the SCV: On this day in 2010, the district attorney dismissed allegations that City Councilman Frank Ferry used questionable language in a letter sent to a water board candidate. The D.A. said that the allegations had no merit.  

Today’s Highlight in History: On Oct. 16, 1962, President John F. Kennedy was informed by national security adviser McGeorge Bundy that reconnaissance photographs had revealed the presence of missile bases in Cuba.

Ten years ago: President George W. Bush signed a congressional resolution authorizing war against Iraq. The White House announced that North Korea had disclosed it had a nuclear weapons program.

Five years ago: Libya won a seat on the U.N. Security Council. Barbara West Dainton, believed to be the next-to-last survivor from the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912, died in Camborne, England, at age 96.

One year ago: The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial was formally dedicated in Washington, D.C. Dan Wheldon, 33, died in a fiery 15-car wreck in the Las Vegas Indy 300. The St. Louis Cardinals captured their 18th NL pennant with a 12-6 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 6.
