Investigators with the county coroner’s officer were trying Tuesday to reach the families of both a man and a woman found dead inside a Newhall home this week.

The bodies of a 51-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, both of Newhall, were found inside the studio apartment of a home on Heritage Lane on the corner of Maple Street around 3 p.m. Monday.

“We’re still trying to reach the next of kin for both these people,” Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner said Tuesday.

The names of the dead would not be released until family could be contacted.

A post-mortem examination of both bodies is scheduled for Wednesday, Corral said. Causes of death had yet to be determined.

Landlord Leonard Miller found both bodies on the floor of the apartment located at the rear of his house. He made the discovery, he said, when he visited the home to find out if his tenant was OK.

The last time he and neighbors say they saw the tenant was a week ago.

Deputies of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said the bodies had been there a while.

Miller’s tenant moved into the wholly-contained studio apartment in February 2010.

The man, according to Miller, worked fixing motorcycles and off-road vehicles in Newhall but was laid off from the repair shop around the time he moved in.

The shop has since gone out of business.

A man who works at a convenience store near the boarded-up shop said he saw the man two weeks ago when he bought some beer.

“He came in with his girlfriend and introduced me to her,” he said. “He said they were going to get married.”

Detectives Wayne Holston and Karen Shonka of the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau are investigating the deaths.
