The California Office of Traffic Safety has awarded a $40,000 grant to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station to conduct a year-long program to increase awareness and enforcement aimed at reducing vehicle-related deaths and injuries.

The grant will fund a variety of activities, including increased enforcement of seat belt use laws, as well as distracted driving, red light, speeding and stop sign laws.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the total number of California traffic deaths fell about 39 percent between 2006 and 2010 but appear to have risen slightly in 2011.
