HIGHLAND, Calif. (AP) — Two people are dead after a runaway truck crushed a car on a San Bernardino County mountain road.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise ( ) says the flatbed truck was hauling an earthmover and forklift on a trailer when it went out of control Monday on Highway 330 between Highland and Running Springs.

The California Highway Patrol says the truck left the road and climbed a hillside, then veered back. The driver jumped or fell to his death but the truck continued for another 150 feet downhill until it jackknifed across the road.

An oncoming car was crushed under it.

The driver died and the passenger, a 58-year-old woman, was treated for pain and scrapes.

The truck will be inspected to determine whether its brakes failed.
