TMC turns it on with two goals by Benson

Despite a winning season overall and in the Golden State Athletic Conference, The Master’s College women’s soccer team will have to likely win the GSAC Tournament to reach the NAIA Tournament.

The sense of urgency was absent for 20 minutes on Tuesday at Reese Field.

Then the Mustangs turned it on for a 2-1 victory over Concordia.

Now TMC gets No. 1 seeded Vanguard in the conference semifinals on the road Friday.

“The first 20 minutes, we played pretty poorly. But the moment we got scored on, I don’t know if that was a shot of adrenaline or energy,” said TMC head coach Curtis Lewis. “The second half, we really took over and outshot them and really pushed well. The team played well for the seniors and gave them one more game of life.”

A key player who gave the Mustangs life was sophomore Jasmine Benson.

After Concordia’s Bri Lopez slipped a goal past TMC goalkeeper Ilysa Espiritu, the Mustangs began to pick up.

But it wasn’t until the game’s 64th minute that they broke through, as Benson scored a goal to tie the score 1-1.

She added another in the game’s 77th minute — the game-winner on an assist from Ashlea Andrade.

Benson had another two shots that were turned away by keeper Bekah Garvin from point-blank range.

Benson has scored all of the Mustangs’ goals the last two games.

“For us, she’s been fantastic, been very dangerous,” Lewis said. “She has been an outside halfback, but we put her up top a couple games ago, and she’s been very dangerous.”
Lewis also complimented sophomore midfielder Shea Richards for her play in the game.

Now things get tougher.

Vanguard is the No. 5 team in the country and defeated the Mustangs 1-0 in overtime on Oct. 9.

“I think we match up very well against Vanguard,” Lewis said. “It would be an upset, but not something that would totally rock my world. I feel we played better than them the first game ... but the question is are we going to play like we did the last 70 minutes (on Tuesday), or the first 20 minutes?”
