A three-week manhunt for the prime suspect in the brutal beating of an elderly man on a bus has ended with his arrest Wednesday.

For the past five days, deputies of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station have been looking for Bernhardt Darko, of Valencia, on a felony arrest warrant.

Since Oct. 5, deputies have been scouring the Santa Clarita Valley for their suspect, having released the man’s photo to the media twice in that time.

On Wednesday, at about 9:30 a.m., detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau announced they arrested the 5-foot-8, 150-pound suspect, according to a sheriff’s media release.

“He was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon,” said Lt. Tom Bryski.

Darko, 28, was nabbed at the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Texahoma Avenue in the Encino area of Los Angeles.

He was booked into the holding cells at the local sheriff’s station on a felony assault charge with a deadly weapon and is being held on $30,000 bail.

Darko is accused of assaulting a man in his late 60s while on a Santa Clarita city bus at the transit center in Valencia at about 7:45 p.m. on Oct. 5.

The victim suffered multiple injuries to his face and head.

When deputies issued their first warning about Darko they advised people that he will “most likely be on foot, riding a bicycle or riding the city bus.”

Local residents were warned by deputies not to approach Darko if they spotted him and were advised not to try and apprehend him.

Deputies thought they might have their man Monday when they were called to a mobile home park in Saugus at 10:35 a.m.

Someone had called the sheriff’s station thinking they had spotted Darko, a sheriff’s spokesman said at the time.

Deputies responded to the call and searched the area without success, he said.
