Buck McKeon: McKeon: Vote for my good record, success

This is a crucial election, probably the most crucial in our lifetime. We as a community and as a nation are facing big issues — big issues that require real leadership.

I know about leadership. I have been fighting for our communities in the Santa Clarita Valley for more than 30 years.

My roots are deep in the valley. As a small-business owner, school board member, the first mayor of Santa Clarita, board member of the local hospital and volunteer for the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley, I have dedicated my life to public service.

As your representative in Congress, I prevented efforts to turn Elsmere Canyon into the largest landfill in the country. I passed legislation that provided the highest level of federal protection for 470,000 acres of land in our district, including the Magic Mountain Wilderness area in the Angeles National Forest and the White Mountains in the Eastern Sierra Nevada.

I worked across the aisle to ensure that the U.S. Forest Service was allowed to resume its nighttime firefighting program to battle out-of-control wildfires in Southern California. I was instrumental in getting the federal dollars necessary to complete the cross-valley connector, a road that has been critical to reducing traffic on local Santa Clarita Valley local roads.

I was also instrumental in obtaining federal funds to clean up the contamination of the Whittaker-Bermite site that is located in the center of our city.

From the beginning, I have been a staunch opponent of the Cemex mine, and I am proud that under my tenure as congressman not one shovel of dirt has turned. I will continue the fight to find a permanent solution to this important local issue.

As much as elections are about the past and the records candidates have to run on, they are also about the future. I believe the choice between myself and my opponent in this election could not be clearer.

If elected I will:

n Continue the fight to get unemployed Californians and Americans back to work by reducing the burdensome regulations and job-killing taxes that are handcuffing small businesses.

n Fight to retain and increase the high-paying, highly skilled aerospace and defense industry jobs that exist in our district.

n Work to get our economy growing by stopping deficit spending, paying down our dangerous national debt and creating stability through a simple tax code that is fair for all Americans, allowing middle-class taxpayers and small businesses to keep more of their hard-earned money.

n Fight to save our national defense and take care of our troops and our veterans. I have led the fight against the sequestration cuts that will decimate our military and impact jobs here at home.

n Protect the middle class. I will continue my efforts to make college more affordable and continue to support legislation that achieves energy independence, resulting in lower gas prices.

n Preserve and protect Medicare and Social Security so that these important programs don’t go bankrupt and are around for future generations.

These are real issues that my opponent is not talking about. Instead, he has forgone substance and made his campaign about attacking me.

As someone who just moved to the district a little over a year ago to run for office, my opponent has failed to show any real ties to this community. In fact, more than 70 percent of his campaign donations have been given through a national liberal organization, and 95 percent of his contributions have come from outside of our congressional district and from outside special-interest groups.

When you are a political challenger running for office with no record of service and no ties to the community, it’s easy to make promises. It’s easy to make promises when you have never had to actually lead.

Here’s what I will promise you: If you give me the honor of your vote, every day I will fight for our community and I will fight for our country. Most of all, I will tell you the truth and the facts about the tough issues we will face together.

I refuse to believe that California’s best days are behind us and that America’s abilities have peaked. I am dedicated to fighting for the country we deserve and the American principles we believe in.

I’m Buck McKeon, and I ask for your vote on Tuesday.

Republican Howard “Buck” McKeon, represents the Santa Clarita Valley in the 25th Congressional District.
