SANTA PAULA, Calif. (AP) — A Ventura County field worker has been killed after being pulled into a machine that digs post holes.

The Ventura County Star reported that 29-year-old Ernesto Rodriguez Gomez of Santa Paula died Friday around 8 a.m. in a farm field near Santa Paula.

Rodriguez's shirt got caught in the machine, called an auger, and he was pulled in. The machine was being hauled by a tractor.

The cause of death was found to be blunt-force trauma.

County sheriff's Sgt. Eric Buschow tells the Star that all indications point to the death being an unfortunate accident.

The state Division of Occupational Safety and Health and county sheriff's department are investigating.
