Santa Clarita officials seek public comments on possible structure

At least 40 people turned out Thursday afternoon to hear about a plan for a new Santa Clarita conference center and to let city officials know what they thought of the idea.

“We need someplace that is not subject to weather, that’s safe, and that’s comfortable for both organizers and attendees,” said Gary Buterbaugh, owner of the local business High Impact Event Resources. “Right now, we’re way behind what other cities have.”

“At this point we don’t know definitively that there is going to be a conference center,” said Russell Sypowicz, a city economic development associate. “But we need to see if there’s public interest.”

The city retained PKF Consulting USA, a hospitality research firm, in 2010 to examine whether there was a market and a demand for a conference center. PKF determined Santa Clarita could most likely support a center of 40,000 to 60,000 square feet in size, according to a project information sheet.

In 2012 the city enlisted the services of Kosmont Companies, a development services firm, and Gensler, an architectural planning and design firm, to develop a conference center master plan.

Collecting public comments is part of that process.

Thursday’s meeting is the first of least two such sessions, Sypowicz said.
