St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church will sponsor the annual Crop Walk Monday, Nov. 12, with other congregations in the SCV. This year’s theme is “Ending Hunger One Step at a Time,” with 25 percent of all donations collected donated to SCV hunger organizations such as Family Promise, Church of Hope Food Pantry, Bridge to Home Homeless Shelter and the Fish Program. To sign up visit The Crop Walk begins and ends at St. Stephen’s Church, 24901 Orchard Village Road, Valencia. On-site registration 8 a.m. with Step-Off time at 8:30 a.m. Info: 661-259-7307.

The Santa Clarita Opera Guild meets 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12. at 25506 Longfellow, Stevenson Ranch. The guest lecture will be from Dr. Ed Lieb an expert on the opera “Madama Buttefly.” Info: Ann Anderson 661-259-9619 for directions and information.

On this date in the SCV: On this day in 2003, a ruptured water pipe caused streets to flood and collapse. The fiasco occurred on Sandy Drive, east of Sierra Highway. Despite the mess the pipe created, no residents were directly affected. California Edison crews filled the 25-foot by 10-foot sinkhole with dirt after the remaining water was flushed out.

Today’s Highlight in History: On Nov. 12, 1942, the World War II naval Battle of Guadalcanal began. (The Allies ended up winning a major victory over Japanese forces.)
