In support of Spierer

To the Editor:

Twenty years ago, I helped form the great city of Santa Clarita and worked closely with the first City Council. Succeeding councils had new members and I worked closely with them too.

I worked with Bob Spierer and many of you through the local Sheriff's Station. Bob taught us about community outreach, partnerships, consensus-building and effective problem-solving. He often let others take the credit, so let me reminisce.

To deal with emerging gang and graffiti problems, Bob teamed with community leaders to create COBRA, a volunteer graffiti removal team and the Anti-Gang Task Force. He assigned deputies long-term to the same neighborhoods, helped keep them connected through town hall meetings and created a storefront presence in Newhall.

He instituted the Haunted Jailhouse, the Teen Survival Guide and issued friendly baseball-type business cards to every deputy. Each of these innovations created unprecedented partnerships and brought national recognition to the new city.

An evaluation committee for the council determined that Bob Spierer was best suited to replace Cameron Smyth.

Bob has the answers and right approach to the issues just begging for his special touch. My SCV family members and many friends are voting for a better future, Bob Spierer. Your vote will make it so.
