LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown has urged the California State University board of trustees to keep costs down to maintain low tuition and fees in the 23-campus system.

In an unusual appearance at the trustees' meeting Tuesday, Brown said he was pleased the board decided to indefinitely postpone a vote on a set of tuition fee hikes that had caused a student outcry.

Board chairman Robert Linscheid says the board tabled the increases after discussions with the governor and students.

Brown says the trustees must "get out of their comfort zone" to control expenses.

Brown is an ex-officio member of the board and had never attended a meeting since his 2011 election.
