Letter: School funding clarified

In trying to explain how school funding works, I chose a topic close to my heart: home economics. I like to eat, so much of my life revolves around cooking and eating.

The word “funds” is the most common denominator in this area, and what it really means is money; money where any governmental body is concerned means your money.

“Schools” are funded by many sources of funding, which all come out of your pocket.

Now think of those school funds as cubes of meat, one square inch. Thread six cubes of meat on a skewer, which is a portion, and then cut the skewer flush with either end of the meat.

The portion is adequate to your tastes, just like school funding is adequate each time the government raises your taxes. But then your hunger increases, and the hunger for more school funding increases at the government level.

Now if you put another piece of meat (more funds) on the skewer, you crowd the meat, and eventually (in about a year or two), a piece of meat (funds) falls off the other end, and now you/they are hungry again.

A perfect example of how this happened to us was the Lottery; if you remember it was going to save the schools for eternity; it was going to give us world peace and a chicken in every pot.

We voted in the Lottery and all was rosy for a while, but then the cube of meat fell off the far end of the skewer and hunger set in for more meat/funds.

The meat/funds that fall off the far end are scooped up by the legislative bodies and used for everything but what they were intended for: education.

Thus we have the shish-kebob principle of economics.
