Curt Scott: Distorted headline

On page A5 of the Nov. 14 edition of The Signal is the continuation thread of a front-page article about a young woman killed in a car crash on McBean Parkway.

The continuation thread is headlined “Woman possibly dies of overdose.”

What? This is distressing. Are you saying that no one has yet determined whether she has expired?

Clearly the writer intended to impart, “Woman dies, possibly of overdose.”

So you see, staff of The Signal, misplacing a modifier can easily distort or alter the entire meaning of a phrase or a sentence.

Or a headline.
