LOS ANGELES (AP) — Supporters of Los Angeles County's jailed assessor are pleading for bail money as a birthday gift for the bribery defendant.

John Noguez, who turned 48 last week, has been in jail for nearly two months awaiting trial on charges he accepted at least $185,000 in bribes in exchange for lowering property tax bills for campaign contributors.

Bail is set at $1.16 million.

The Los Angeles Daily News ( says the group Friends of John Noguez sent emails late Sunday asking for bail donations.

The email noted Noguez loved throwing birthday parties that usually doubled as fundraisers.

If Noguez makes bail, the group says he can care for his three dachshunds and visit his ailing mother.

Noguez lawyer Michael Proctor didn't immediately return a voicemail message left Tuesday.
