As the new state legislative session starts up, local representatives are taking on leadership roles in representative committees.

Assemblyman Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, announced Thursday that he has been named the vice chairman of the state Assembly Rules Committee for its 2013 legislative session.

The committee serves as the Assembly’s executive committee, handling all personnel matters, granting rule suspensions or waivers and referring all proposed bills to the proper committee for review.

The chairwoman of the Assembly Rules Committee is three-term Democrat Nancy Skinner.

Assemblyman Steve Fox, D-Lancaster, has been named chairman of the Select Committee on Community Colleges.

Fox has previously served as a member of the Antelope Valley College Board of Trustees.

Another local Democrat, 27th District Sen. Fran Pavley, is also set to fill some leadership roles.

Pavley has served as the chairwoman of the Senate’s Committee on Natural Resources and Water, Select Committee on the Environment, the Economy, and Climate Change and Subcommittee on Urban Rivers.

Sen. Steve Knight, R-Antelope Valley, was not named to a leadership role on a committee, according to his chief of staff David Orosco.

Orosco said full legislative committee memberships should be announced next week.
