A Saugus couple has won a water-conservation contest sponsored by the Castaic Lake Water Agency, collecting a $5,000 landscape makeover courtesy of Stay Green Inc.

The year-long contest, “What’s your H2O Solution?” called for residents to submit water-saving ideas to the agency, which judged them on criterion of best and most feasible.

“We are thrilled with the results,” said homeowner Steve Petzold, who won the front-yard makeover for the winning water-saving idea. “Even though many of our plants were drought-tolerant already, they were planted so many years ago that they weren’t thriving.”

Steve and Thane Petzold won for their presentation on drip irrigation, rock gardens and sustainable plants, a Castaic Lake Water Agency spokeswoman said.

“Many of the winning concepts were ideas that were easy to duplicate and didn’t cost much money,” said Stephanie Anagnoson, water conservation program coordinator for the district.

“We’re very grateful to CLWA and Stay Green for their attention and hard work on our new front yard,” Steve Petzold said.
