Dick’s Sporting Goods has announced it has suspended sales of modern sporting rifles from its stores nationwide because of the Connecticut elementary school shootings.

“We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, Conn.,” the sporting goods chain posted in a statement on its website. “Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community.”

Out of respect for the victims and their families, the company said it has suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all its stores nationwide.

A spokesman at the Santa Clarita Dick’s Sporting Goods store said it did not carry guns prior to the shooting last Friday, which left 20 children and and six adults dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

This holiday shopping season saw a record number of gun sales, KABC reported on Dec. 4. The FBI did nearly 284,000 firearm background checks after Black Friday weekend, up nearly 32 percent from last year.

So many guns were sold on the day after Thanksgiving that the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System experienced two outages that day, the broadcaster reported.
