Friendly Valley Community Church is planning a special “Blue Christmas” service Friday, an event targeted to the longest night of the year with open arms for those feeling losses during the holiday season.

“The service intends to be a safe, peaceful time where those feeling the blues will feel at home,” said the Rev. Stanley Fix, pastor of the church.

The public is invited to attend. Candles will be lit in memory of loved ones who have died and for those killed in Newtown, Conn.

“We all deal with uncertainty and loss, personally and on a wider scale,” Fix said. “There is a lot of uncertainty and pain in the Christmas story itself.”

The 45-minute “Longest Night/Blue Christmas” service begins at 4 p.m. Friday at the church, 19246 Avenue of the Oaks in Friendly Valley.
