HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (AP) — State fish and game officials are vowing to learn from the shooting of two mountain lion cubs in Half Moon Bay — a decision that was criticized by wildlife advocates.

Calling the Dec. 1 incident "unfortunate," state Department of Fish and Game Director Charlton Bonham said Friday that he is awaiting the results of a review of the agency's guidelines on responding to mountain lions and bears.

Bonham's remarks came as a necropsy showed the two female lions that were shot while huddling under a porch were smaller and younger than the agency originally stated. They were four months old and weighed about 13 to 14 pounds.

Fish and game officials say authorities hazed the lions, but they refused to leave the area. Assistant Chief Tony Warrington said in a perfect world, additional non-lethal options would have been available.
