SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A late-night fire swept through a San Jose apartment, leaving three people dead, injuring three others, and forcing the evacuation of nearly 60 people, authorities said Sunday.

One of the injured was a police officer who suffered smoke inhalation while rescuing someone, San Jose Fire Department Capt. Mary Gutierrez said.

Fire crews reached the scene shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday and found some people trapped in the burning apartment on the second floor of the building, Gutierrez told The Associated Press.

The bodies of a man, a woman and a child were later recovered. She said officials were trying to confirm their identities and relationship.

Three others were hospitalized, including the officer who rescued one of the injured. All suffered from smoke inhalation but there was no immediate word on their conditions.

No other injuries were reported.

Firefighters brought the blaze, which was confined to just the single second-floor unit, under control after about two hours.

Fifty-six people from other units of the building were evacuated and the Red Cross was assessing alternative housing, she said.
