Officials think unknown substance is behind four youths acting ‘really out of it’

Four juveniles were released from Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Saturday, after they were found disoriented or unconscious at the Borders bookstore in Valencia Friday night, according to sheriff’s officials.

County fire officials said the teens, who ranged from about 13 to 19 years old, might have taken some kind of drug or medication, sheriff’s Lt. Robert Lewis said.

A bookstore manager reportedly found the teens in a section of the store during his closing-time rounds.

Lewis said deputies went to the bookstore at about 9:45 p.m. after the manager reported finding the teens.

The four had ingested an unknown substance, Lewis said.

The detective on scene conducted some interviews and talked with kids there regarding what happened, but they have not yet identified any criminal activity, he said.

“I don’t know if they were completely passed out or just groggy, but they were not coherent,” he said. “I don’t think they knew what they were taking. We didn’t push the issue with them because they were really out of it.”

The teens were taken to the hospital Friday night.

Sheriff’s officials are concerned about the substance and are following up with families and the juveniles, Lewis said.

“They’re investigating whether there is anything that may cause concern within the community, as far as what the substance was, if they found it, if they got it from something ... where’d they get it from,” he said.

Detectives will try to make contact with the teens' residences, Lewis said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
