The William S. Hart Union High School District hopes to have a name selected for the Castaic-area high school in the next few months.

Speaking in front of the Hart district board last week, spokeswoman Gail Pinsker said the district would like to pick a name by this spring.

To do so, Pinsker recommended the district form a citizens’ advisory committee to help collect recommended names and make a list of suggestions for the school board.

Most high schools in the district are named for the areas they serve. In a Signal Facebook and website email survey of suggested names, most participants suggested simply Castaic High School. One Facebook visitor added, “Duh.”

But others had different suggestions, some for regional features, some tongue in cheek.

Just one reader suggested naming the school after an individual: Miriam Canty, a school teacher and community leader from Val Verde who served on the board of the Santa Clarita Valley Boys & Girls Club and on the board for the Samuel Dixon Family Health Center during the mid-20th century.

Two existing district high schools are named for individuals: Hart High School, named for silent movie star William S. Hart, and Bowman High School, the district’s continuation high school, named for Jereann Bowman, who was a community leader named Santa Clarita Valley Woman of the Year in 1973.

The school's mascot and school colors will also be selected and presented to the board for approval sometime in the near future, once the school's planning principal has been identified.
