The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority will conduct its biennial head count of the county’s homeless population this week, culminating in a Thursday visit to the Santa Clarita Valley.

The authority uses the count, officially known as the 2013 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count, as a way to document the demographics of the county’s homeless population.

The count also helps the authority determine if existing county and city services are sufficient to provide for the needs of a region’s homeless population.

The Homeless Services Authority divides the county into eight service-planning areas. Most of the Santa Clarita Valley is combined with the San Fernando Valley in one such area.

The city of Santa Clarita is one of 72 cities countywide that is participating in the count this year.
