Happy birthday to us
The Signal is 90 years old. Amazing, isn't it? In today's world of 500 cable channels, the Internet and information beamed to your cell phone there's still nothing that can compare to your hometown community newspaper.
It's a treat to see photos of your child's school play, read about your neighbor's favorite charity or keep tabs on your city's politicians - all delivered to your doorstep.
Only your community newspaper will report on what's up at city hall, let you know about crime in your neighborhood or publish your wedding, engagement and birth announcements. A strong community newspaper makes for a strong community.
News, sports, business, features and entertainment, coupons and comics - the pages of The Signal have something for everyone.
I am proud to have served The Signal and the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley for 10 of those 90 years. Happy birthday to us.

Births, weddings, engagements etc.
For those who may not be aware, The Signal is happy to publish birth, wedding, engagement, anniversary, community scrapbook and in the service announcements on our Lifestyle section pages.
The announcements are published free of charge as a service to the community. Residents can pick up forms at The Signal's front desk Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Information can also be e-mailed to If attaching photos, please remember to make sure you send a large file, a photo 10-inches wide at 72 resolution will do the trick.
Make sure it is .jpg format. We welcome your community news also. Clubs and organizations are also welcome to submit information to the same e-mail address for publication.

Women in Service seeks nominees
Santa Clarita nonprofit and service organizations are invited by Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley to nominate their outstanding volunteers to be honored at the 2009 Women in Service Celebration. This year's brunch will be held March 28, at the Robinson Ranch clubhouse in Sand Canyon.
All nominees will be guests of Zonta at the brunch and will receive an award on behalf of their sponsoring organization. One outstanding volunteer will be selected to receive the Carmen Sarro Award for Community Service.
In addition to seeking nominations for honorees, Zonta is accepting reservations from friends and supporters of the nominees to attend the event. This is the 25th year Zonta has been saluting outstanding SCV women with this program. Brunch is $30 per person and reservations are required.
For nomination forms visit and click on events. A flyer for reserving tables or individual seats at the brunch also is available. Additional information is available by calling the Zonta message line at (661) 252-9351.

Santa Clarita coupon books
Do you have yours? These neat coupon books, which benefit the marching band program at Valencia High School contain tons of restaurant and services coupons for SCV businesses.
I've already more than paid for my book by using the coupons in the book. There are great free carwash coupons in this book from The AutoSpa, too. The $20 books can be obtained by calling Teresa Todd at (661) 299-4000.
Michele E. Buttelman is the features and entertainment editor of The Signal. She can be reached by e-mail at
