The West Ranch Wildcats boys soccer team felt like it left everything on the field during Thursday’s CIF-Southern Section Division IV second-round matchup with the Oak Hills of Hesperia Bulldogs.

But a Bulldogs penalty kick goal after a West Ranch handball in the box late in the first half proved the difference, as Oak Hills defeated West Ranch 2-1 at Oak Hills High School.

“It was a rough one,” said West Ranch head coach Fred McGinn, adding that the penalty was deserved. “We were moving pretty well, and if you get to the half with a draw it might have been a different outcome. It was a rough one to get them up again.”

West Ranch fell behind about 15 minutes into the first half when the Wildcats (16-6-3 overall) failed to clear the ball out of their defensive zone and left the net exposed.

But Wade McMillon equalized on a run midway through the half.

The goal was McMillon’s 14th of the season, a new West Ranch High School record.

“He probably beat five different players and caught the goalkeeper and got the goal,” McGinn said. “It was a really nice goal.”

Oak Hills (23-2-2) kept the pressure on in the second half, but the Wildcats’ backline held strong.

West Ranch goalkeeper Alex Manzo made three saves in the game.

“We shut them down pretty good,” McGinn said. “We didn’t let them get many shots off. That team has scored (88) goals this season, so we just knew we couldn’t let them get shots away because they know how to finish.”

The Wildcats will graduate 14 seniors off this year’s Foothill League runner-up squad.

“I think we had a really good season,” McGinn said. “We had a couple bad days, but for the most part really good days, and the boys played really, really good soccer. They all played hard and played well. You have a lot of young players on that team. West Ranch is a pretty strong team coming into next year.”
