Santa Clarita Century cycle ride rolls Feb. 28 to benefit Child & Family Center

Features 100-mile and 50-mile courses; 6-mile Family Ride

A week after the Amgen Tour of California cycle race rolls out of the Santa Clarita Valley at the start of the race's Stage 7, Santa Clarita Velo, in partnership with the City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Child & Family Center, will direct the first annual Santa Clarita Century Ride & Family Fun Event.

Starting at 7 a.m. at the Santa Clarita Metrolink station, 22122 Commuter Way at the corner of Soledad Canyon Road in Saugus, the Santa Clarita Century is not a race but an event that will mean different things to different people. Some will view it as a challenge; others will take it as a social opportunity; all will leave with a memorable experience.

Participants can sign up for the 100-mile Century Ride, the 50-mile Half-Century Ride or the Family Ride.

The Century and Half-Century rides will follow some of the route from Stage 7 of the Amgen Tour of California. The Family Ride is a six-mile route on Santa Clarita's bike trails, away from automobile traffic.

Riders may pre-register by mail before Feb. 20 or online before Feb. 24. This year, the inaugural ride is limited to 350 riders. Riders will want to check the Web site or e-mail before attempting to register the day of the event.

Paid registration includes:
* On-course refueling stops
* Bicycle expo
* Route slips for 50- & 100-mile riders
* Course markings & volunteers to help with route directions
* Roving SAG (support and gear) and mechanical support
* Complimentary event T-shirt

Entry prior to deadlines is $50 single rider, $75 tandem team. After deadlines, a $10 late charge will be added ($60 single, $85 tandem).

Day of Event
Registration will be available Saturday morning from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. if the race has not sold out ahead of time. Add a $10 fee ($60 single riders, $85 tandem teams).

Proceeds benefit the Center, which has provided quality mental health, behavioral and educational services for children and families in Santa Clarita since 1976. The Child & Family Center is dedicated to helping youth, adults and families reach their full potential for becoming caring, responsible individuals.

About Santa Clarita Velo
Santa Clarita Velo is a bicycle club based in Santa Clarita with more than 100 members. It is a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting bicycling and bicycle safety in the Santa Clarita Valley.

As a member of USA Cycling (USAC), the Velo promotes a sanctioned race every year. Two such events have been successfully hosted for the last 14 years: the Chuck Pontius Memorial Criterium in Valencia and the Punchbowl Road Race outside Palmdale. The Pontius Criterium has been co-sponsored by the City of Santa Clarita since its inception and in 2008 nearly 500 racers participated.
