Around the Divisions: Just like in league, top three are close

CIF polls reveal Canyon, Saugus, Valencia in top 10, Hart hoops moves up

We've reached the final week of Foothill League play and still noting is decided in girls soccer.

Saugus, Valencia and Canyon are still tied atop the league standings.

So it begs the question: What will happen if the three teams tie for the top spot?

There are a couple of tiebreakers that will determine who becomes the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 seeds from the Foothill for the postseason.

The first is head-to-head competition.

If that doesn't decide anything, the next tiebreaker is a point system based off of the quality of wins in the Foothill League.

For example, a victory against a last-place team is worth one point, a victory against a fifth place team is worth two, and so on.

The top team is guaranteed a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The second team could also get a home game.

Add to this, the top three teams in the Foothill League are battling in another standing - the CIF-Southern Section Division II poll.

Obviously, the higher they climb in the poll, the better matchup they'll likely get early in the playoffs.

And the higher they climb, the less likely they'll play the top two seeds until deep in the postseason.

Division II
There are no changes for the local teams in the Division II poll that was released Monday. Saugus remains at No. 6, Valencia is at No. 7 and Canyon is still tied for 10th.

No. 1 Flintridge
Sacred Heart of
La Canada-Flintridge

Record: 15-4-2, 7-1 in the Mission League
Last game: Wednesday, 5-0 win over Alemany
The Tologs are 9-1 in their last 10 games, with all wins coming via the shutout. Give junior goalkeeper Dominique Oro a lot of the credit. On the season, she has 11 shutouts. Though the team gets offense from various players, Kaite Johnson has filled the stat sheet best. She has eight goals and eight assists this season. Flintridge Sacred Heart defeated Saugus on Dec. 6 by a score of 3-1.

No. 2 Canyon of

Record: 15-4-2, 6-0-1 in the Century League
Last game: Thursday, 1-0 win over El Modena
Since losing four straight in December, the Comanches haven't lost in 2009. Canyon is stingy, allowing only 20 goals this season.

Boys Basketball
In boys basketball, there were two changes from last week's poll. Saugus has lost six straight games and have also dropped out of the Division II-AA poll.
Hart jumped up two spots in the Division III-AA poll to a tie for eighth.

The top three in that poll are: No. 1 Campbell Hall, No. 2 Canyon of Anaheim and No. 3 Santa Margarita.

Valencia is at No. 6 in Division II-AA and West ranch is at No. 9. Nos. 1 through 3 are as follows: Thousand Oaks, Leuzinger and Glendora, respectively.

There is no change in Division III-A as Golden Valley holds down the No. 4 spot.

Diamond Ranch, Sonora and Harvard-Westlake are at Nos. 1 through three respectively.
