To The Editor:

The "poll demand" that Maria Gutzeit spoke of at the candidate forum is regarding the opinions and assessments of the local citizens.

All politicians use them to get an idea of what constituents want, although polls aren't the only determinants that are used.

Maria is an excellent athlete, a professional chemical engineer, and a great negotiator. Her great physical fitness and clear-headed ideas are due to serious bicycling, walking her dogs and good nutrition.

Bicycling is a huge sport that our community embraces annually with the Amgen tour. The opposition, however, would make you think this is all she is interested in.

Isn't it coincidental that her harshest opponents, the ones who ostracize her (for) bike riding, haven't been on a bike in years? She also led the way in widening Bouquet Canyon and providing amenities for cyclists with the open space initiative along with Diane Trautman, the Sierra Club and the Nature Conservatory, and in establishing a dog park.

Her endurance and discipline is what has enabled her to get elected two times to the Newhall County Water District board. This is significant because it takes far more perseverance and determination to win an election than it does to just simply be appointed.

As president and vice president of the Newhall Water board, she made sure our water wasn't privatized. She is a "policy wonk," listens intently, and knows how to go out to the community and to the source when she needs the answers.

Take an inventory; she is not beholden to the Ferry, McLean or Kellar camps. Yes, she is a fine person who believes bipartisanship is necessary in this valley. It takes courage to live here and to take this unpopular stance from the Republican and "green" cabals.

With eyes wide open we encourage you to vote again for Maria Gutzeit for the Santa Clarita City Council on Tuesday, April 8. Also consider the no-nonsense approach of Diane Trautman, an outstanding advocate of "rental rights" for the seniors.

Citizens, change can happen in Santa Clarita if you have the guts to vote your hearts. We dare you!
