For all that Canyon senior forward Alia McCoy had accomplished in her stellar basketball career, there was one thing she couldn’t say.

Now she can.

The league’s coaches selected McCoy as the 2013 Foothill League Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

“I’m so happy. I’m really happy. I feel like this year, after the chances I’ve had, it was like, ‘OK Alia,’” McCoy said on turning it on this season. “It feels nice to actually be named Player of the Year. I honestly feel I couldn’t do it without this year’s team. I know I put in the hard work, but I don’t think I could have done it without this year’s teammates.”

The All-Foothill League teams were also announced on Monday.

The first team was almost entirely made up of players from the Foothill League’s co-champions Valencia and Canyon.

Valencia was represented by senior guard and four-year varsity player Kalia Summerlin, senior forward and three-year varsity player Jennifer Anumba and junior power forward Sandra Ikeora.

Canyon four-year varsity player Jaya Schultz made her first All-Foothill first team, as did three-year varsity player and junior guard Kali Vittallo.

West Ranch junior guard Whitney Branham, who led the Foothill at 17.7 points per game, was the only non-Foothill champion on the first team.

This year, McCoy led the Cowboys to their fourth consecutive Foothill League title.

Prior to that run, the only league title in Canyon history was 1973.

McCoy is the Cowboys’ all-time leading scorer and a two-time All-Foothill League selection. But 2013 may have been her best year.

In Foothill League play, the St. Mary’s College commit averaged 16.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 5.2 steals and 4.0 assists per game — all team highs.

“She’s one of the most mature kids mentally I’ve ever been around,” said Canyon head coach Chuck Johns. “She is always positive with other kids. For your best player, you should try and get the most shots, so to lead the team in assists, it’s always team-first for her.”

The second team was represented by Canyon sophomore center Delaney McCann, West Ranch senior forward Hannah Green, Hart guard/forward sophomore Breze Kimble, Valencia sophomore guard/forward Talia Roth, Saugus senior forward Rachel Eaton and Saugus junior guard Justice Bennett.

The honorable mentions were Canyon senior Marissa Schwimmer, Golden Valley junior Mariah Madison, Hart freshman Julia White, Saugus senior Faye Osburn, Valencia senior Jasmin Dimson and West Ranch senior Melissa Arima.
