Valencia soccer makes mess of playoff picture

Vikings boys prevent Golden Valley from claiming a postseason spot; third place up for grabs

Golden Valley held its Senior Day on Tuesday.

Valencia was not a gracious guest.

The Vikings blanked Golden Valley 4-0, which sets up a huge showdown Thursday between the Grizzlies (8-5-4, 3-3-3) and West Ranch. The game will likely determine who earns the third and final playoff spot in the Foothill League.

Golden Valley head coach Phil Lopez hopes his team is more ready to play.

“Unfortunately, we picked the worst day to have our worst game,” he said. “We came out flat. Lately, our problem is we can’t finish.”

Finishing is something Valencia did well on Tuesday.

John Barritt opened the scoring for the Vikings, and Adam Eisen and Alex McIntyre followed up with goals of their own.

Ben Beilin punched one home a few minutes before the final whistle for the Vikings (5-5-8, 2-3-4).

“We talked about showing pride in the last two games,” said Valencia head coach Tony Scalercio. “We’re peaking at the right time. It felt like we had more goals today than we’ve had all league season.”

If Valencia defeats Canyon on Thursday, and if Golden Valley and West Ranch battle to a draw, all three teams would tie for third in the Foothill League with 13 points apiece.

Lopez certainly hopes it doesn’t reach that point.

“Hats off to Valencia,” he said. “We’ve got a game left, so we’ll give it our all and see what happens.”

Golden Valley honored its seniors by starting all seven of them.
