Don’t close the book on this season just yet.

Trinity Classical Academy boys basketball hits the road toward the Fresno area to face Tranquillity High on Wednesday night in the first round of the CIF State Division V Basketball tournament.

The state tournament brackets were released Sunday night.

On Saturday, the Trinity Knights fell short of a CIF-Southern Section Division VI title after losing 47-40 to Rio Hondo Prep.

Given their performance in the Southern Section playoffs, the Knights (18-6) now get a chance to play for a state championship in Division V.

“We had a little hiccup on Saturday but it’s nice to still have the opportunity to play and just anytime that we can get our guys playing together in a competitive environment, it just makes them better,” said Trinity head coach John Brooks.

Prior to this season no other Trinity team had reached a CIF final in any other sport, nor had any team advanced to a state tournament.

In Trinity’s half of the Division V bracket, it earned a No. 9 seed out of 16 teams from the Southern California region, which covers everywhere in the state south of Fresno.

“It should be pretty interesting, although I was surprised we’re the ninth seed out of 16 teams,” Brooks said. “I was surprised we weren’t the 16th seed. We have to be the smallest school out of the whole bracket and we’re got to be one of the youngest teams.”

Tranquillity (13-13), which is located in a small town with the same name about 30 miles west of Fresno, is the eighth seed in the bracket.

On Friday, the Tranquillity Tigers won the CIF-Central Section Division V championship.

In watching some brief game film on the Tigers, Brooks said the team looks like it has talented guards, but no real big man in the post.

It should be an interesting clash in styles, Brooks said, since Trinity prefers to play big and attack the basket.

The winner of Wednesday’s game will earn a road trip to San Diego to face Horizon Christian, the bracket’s No. 1 seed.

Other teams in the bracket include seventh-seeded Rio Hondo Prep and No. 2 seed Buckley, which Trinity lost to earlier this season on Jan. 15.

Trinity would have to win four games to make it to the Division V state championship game. That game will be played against the Northern California champion in Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.
