Knights fall in state playoffs to Horizon

Trinity Classical Academy head coach John Brooks said he was shaking hands with Horizon High coaches after his Knights lost 52-33 in the second round of the CIF Division V State Basketball Championships in San Diego Saturday night when a Panthers coach paid a large compliment.

“He said, ‘You guys are going to be very good for a long time,’” Brooks said the coach told him.

It simply wasn’t the Knights’ time – yet.

And it’s a story that’s been told for a solid week now.

Trinity lost 47-40 to a more seasoned Rio Hondo Prep team in the CIF-Southern Section Division VI championship March 2, then bounced back with a 63-49 victory on Wednesday in the first round of the state tournament.

But the competition rose on Saturday.

“This is the finished product,” Brooks said. “That was a senior-laden team that worked the ball around and made shots.”

Nine seniors to be exact. Trinity has one and almost as many freshmen — seven.

The difference was the second quarter, Brooks said.

Trinity led 10-6 early, but trailed 17-12 after one quarter.

The Knights were outscored 14-4 in the second, as the Panthers took a 31-16 lead into the break.

The game turned when Horizon, the CIF-San Diego Section Division V champions, turned up the offense and beat the Knights in transition.

The lead ballooned to 44-25 after three quarters, as Trinity just couldn’t get its offense going.

The Knights were led by Ryan Brooks and Ian Caddow, who each scored seven points.

Brooks added seven rebounds.

Spencer Klehn scored six points on a sprained ankle and added five rebounds and four steals.

Michael Mateo pulled down nine rebounds.

All four players will return next season.

Horizon was led by Cody Underwood and Markel Byrd, who each scored 11.
