HIGHLAND, Calif. (AP) — A police officer ran down and captured an arson suspect after five small but suspicious fires broke out in the San Bernardino National Forest.

Forest Service spokesman John Miller says the Thursday fires were close together, totaled about one acre, and were quickly doused.

A deputy and two Forest Service employees spotted a suspect while the fires burned and chased him as he ran up a large hill.

San Bernardino police officer Brett Murphy tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise ( that he found a quicker path up the hill and was waiting for the suspect, who turned around when he saw the officer then started tumbling down the hill.

The suspect ran through a ravine at the bottom of the hill before tiring out. Murphy caught him.
